Rich in historical detail and compelling storyline ... This is a compelling children's novel set firmly both in time and place - the turn of the nineteenth century in smugglers' Devon. It is a well constructed novel that leads the reader through the Devon landscape and along a journey of conspiracy and friendship. I think that young readers will enjoy the fast pace of the novel and the daring plot, while older readers will also appreciate the rich historical detail - from archaic wrestling practises,(sic) press gangs and sea bathing machines. It is clear that the author has done his research for this novel. The portrayal of the quack at Sidmouth and his bathing machine is particularly endearing. A thoroughly good read.

Good fun read ... This is a good fun adventure story for younger readers, with lots of twists and turns, and good ultimately triumphing over evil. Very evocative of the West Country too for anyone who knows the area. Would make an excellent stocking filler.

Not just for youth ... I was surprised to see this book described as a 'Children's Book' As a (very) mature adult I found the characterisation superb and the story was gripping. Add in the historical details and geographical interest and the result is a well-crafted page-turner which I enjoyed immensely....

Loved it! Compelling and evocative! Just finished this book that was recommended to me by a friend and I'm definitely going to recommend it on to my friends. Couldn't put it down. Fast moving, vivid with suspense and intrigue but also humour. Made me want to me want to travel to Devon again - if you've never been it'll make you want to visit! Can't wait for my children to be old enough to be able to read it with them - think they'll love it too (going to wait til they are 9 or so). I'd rate it as a great book - not just for adults but with something for older children too.

A really gripping read ... As it says on the publisher's website this is a book suitable for young and old I am of the "old" category but I started reading it and couldn't put it down as the story was so gripping I just had to know what was going to happen next.
