Stanford in the Vale - The Hidden Past Revealed
David Ashby
This book describes the growth and development of the village of
Stanford in the Vale, from its earliest beginnings nearly 10,000 years
ago to the present day.
Over a 15-year period Dr David Ashby and his team have undertaken
archaeological investigations resulting in newly-discovered insights
into the history of the village. These include evidence for a Neolithic
settlement, a previously-unknown Iron Age fortified enclosure, a Roman
fort and a large Saxon settlement. The book then examines the growth
of Stanford into an urban centre/town during the medieval period,
and then its subsequent decline, exploring the reasons for this change.
Finally, the evolution into the post-medieval and modern village we see
today is described.
This book is a fascinating insight into the history and archaeology
of Stanford in the Vale, and of rural settlement development. It also
shows how a broad practical archaeological approach can be utilised to
examine the changing nature and formation of settlements.
